Identify Your Vehicle

For the most accurate results, use your VIN — found on your dashboard (visible through the windshield), driver's door jamb, or registration. Year / Make / Model works too, but a VIN ties data directly to your exact vehicle.

        Founder, 2nd Opinion Automotive

I spent over 15 years in the automotive service industry — most of those years as a service advisor, helping customers understand their repairs and save money when possible. I've written the estimates. I've seen the upsells. I know how the process works from the inside.

What I saw over and over again were good, smart people making bad decisions — not because they were careless, but because nobody ever gave them the information they needed. They'd either approve everything out of fear, or decline everything out of distrust. Neither one is a plan.

I built 2nd Opinion Automotive because I believe every driver deserves to understand what they're paying for. This tool lets you check car recalls, complaints, and safety ratings in one place — free, no strings, just information you can actually use.

        Frequently Asked Questions

What data does this tool use?

When you check car recalls using this tool, all data is pulled live from NHTSA's public database — the same database used by the federal government to track vehicle safety issues. Safety ratings come from NHTSA's 5-Star Safety Ratings Program. Nothing is stored or cached on our end.

Do I need my VIN to use this?

No. You can check car recalls with just your year, make, and model. For results tied specifically to your exact vehicle configuration, you can use NHTSA's VIN lookup tool at nhtsa.gov — there's a direct link in the Recalls tab once you look up your vehicle.

Is this tool affiliated with any repair shop or manufacturer?

No. 2nd Opinion Automotive has no financial relationship with any repair shop, dealership, or manufacturer. We don't get paid whether you repair your vehicle or not — which is exactly why you can trust what we tell you.

My vehicle isn't showing up. What should I do?

The vehicle list is pulled from NHTSA's database, which covers most US-market consumer vehicles from the mid-1990s onward. Very new model years, limited-production vehicles, or some imported models may not appear. For the most complete data, visit nhtsa.gov directly and use your full 17-digit VIN.

What is the Confident Car Care Academy?

It's a collection of plain-language PDF guides that teach everyday drivers how the automotive repair industry works — from reading estimates to choosing a shop to understanding what's urgent versus what can wait. Designed for people who deal with shops, not people who want to become mechanics.

Will this teach me how to fix my own car?

No — and that's by design. The Academy teaches you how to be an informed customer so you can make confident decisions when someone else is doing the work. Think of it as learning how to evaluate the service, not perform it.

What's the difference between the three tiers?

Get Started ($27) is your core "am I getting ripped off?" toolkit — 4 guides focused on spotting dishonest mechanics, reading estimates, and verifying your invoice.

Essentials ($67) adds 5 more guides covering maintenance, warning lights, breakdowns, and second opinions — moving you from reactive to proactive.

Full Academy ($179) is the complete set of 17 guides plus all future updates. Everything we publish, for life.

        Who is this for?

Anyone who drives a car and has ever felt unsure, anxious, or overcharged at a repair shop. You don't need any mechanical knowledge — that's the whole point. If you've ever stared at an estimate and thought "I have no idea if this is fair," this is for you.

Disclaimer: When you check car recalls using this tool, the data shown is sourced from NHTSA's public database and is provided for general informational purposes only.
